State of Michigan increases snowmobile permit price

State of Michigan increases snowmobile permit price

“Michigan snowmobilers will face higher trail fees this season. The state has raised the price for a season permit to $45, from $35 last year.

The fee will remain $45 through the 2015 snowmobile season. A state law signed in 2008 provided for the incremental increase in snowmobile trail fees, which support maintenance and grooming of the state’s snowmobile trail network.

“We have strong relationships with our partners in the snowmobile community,” Jim Radabaugh, section manager for the DNR’s Recreation and Trails Program in the Forest Management Division, told the Niles Daily Star. “It is because of our partnership with 68 snowmobile trail sponsors that Michigan is able to offer over 6,400 miles of designated, groomed and signed trails.”

The fee hike is to keep up with rising trail maintenance and preservation costs.”

According to Sky News, Idol emerged from the hospital last week on crutches and wearing a cast on his right foot. Idol said on Twitter that he had surgery to “correct malformation of foot due to hitting a truck tire in road a year ago.”

Idol tweeted:

“Hit foot on shredded truck tire causing a hairline fracture a year a 1/2 ago and it was calcifying causing malform pain.”

Then later said:

“Motorcycling at around 60 mph when i hit the tire in the road. meanwhile tonight I’m crushing one of these percocet pills and shooting it!”

This isn’t the Idol’s first motorcycle accident. In 1990 the Rebel Yell singer was nearly killed when a car ran a stop sign and crashed into him on his bike.”

Flat Out in Arctic Cat’s New Wildcat

Flat Out in Arctic Cat’s New Wildcat

“Look out Polaris! Cross-state nemesis Arctic Cat has set its engineering cross hairs directly on its arch rival’s hugely successful RZR XP 900 with the release of the all-new Wildcat — a pure-sport off-road side-by-side that revives the name of departed muscle sled. The Wildcat has a powerful engine, trophy truck-style suspension, racer-friendly ergonomics and an “exoskeleton chassis” that’s designed to handle the toughest terrain on the planet. Digging into the specifics, Arctic Cat’s new 2012 Wildcat 1000i H.O. is powered by the same 951cc V-Twin that serves duty atop the company’s ATV lineup. Lower and wider than its Prowler side-by-sides, the Wildcat has a radical 5-link rear suspension that has a whoop-crushing 18 inches of travel, while the front dual A-arms provide 17. The shocks are from Walker Evans, with compression adjustability, as well as a two-stage spring preload adjustment.

Wildcat Tom Liz1

The rugged land near Barstow, California is the ideal place to evaluate the Wildcat, and where many off-road race teams do their testing. Other key features include electric power steering to significantly tame bump steer, sharp aluminum rims, super-bright LED headlights and taillights, 14-inch rims, disc brakes at both ends, an automotive-grade paint job and a fan-cooled radiator mounted behind the seats — part of the packaging necessary to achieve the desired 40/60 front-to-rear weight balance. With a modern, aggressive design penned by Nathan Blomker — the same graphic artist behind Arctic Cat’s new snowmobile chassis, the Wildcat is a huge leap for its off-road division, and takes the brand in a much sportier direction.”

World Championship Derby announces race dates

World Championship Derby announces race dates

“The AmSoil World Championship Derby spokesperson, known as the “Indianapolis 500 of snowmobile racing,” announced dates for this year’s races.

The 2012 derby dates are January 19-22, 2012 in Eagle River, Wis.

This year marks the 49th anniversary of the derby. The Track has been home to the race for 48 years.

Ice oval, snocross and vintage racing will all take place at this year’s derby.

Last year more than 30,000 spectators from around the world attended. The derby track builds and maintains the ice oval and sno cross track with over 2 million gallons of water, a 4,000 gallon water truck, a state of the art snow making machine, a Bombardier ME Plus Groomer, and a Nortec Ice Shaver.

The weekend begins with Thursday evening time trials, then the Friday Night Thunder’s Sweet Sixteen sponsored by the Snowmobile Headquarters where the sixteen fastest time qualifiers race for Pole Position in the Championship finals, into Saturday afternoon’s grueling heats, quarter and semi finals to fill nine more spots in the Top Ten.  Sunday morning is the LCQ (last chance qualifier) to put two racers on the second row (twelve make the final field).  In 2011, the drivers faced a new challenge, a thirty lap final with a mandatory pit stop after 15 laps.  To make the stop more rewarding there was a $2500 pay out to the Jimmy John’s Mid Race winner and checks for 2nd, 3rd, and 4th also. This new format brought more “inside” race action to the spectators who could watch what normally only happens in the pits, as race crews tended to the sleds, drivers stretched muscles, had pit action brought right into the front and center viewing.”

No more SnoCross at the ESPN Winter X Games?

Cancelled? Booooooooooo! Midwesterners collectively turn off the TV…

Michaelroth

Per ESPN:

One of the longest-running Winter X Games events — Snowmobile SnoCross racing — will no longer be a part of the Winter X program, as of this coming January’s event in Aspen, Colo., X Games officials announced Thursday. SnoCross debuted in 1998 as the first motorized sport in X Games history, and had been contested every year since then. Speed & Style, which combines snowmobiling’s freestyle and racing disciplines, and adaptive SnoCross, are also being eliminated. Each year the X Games monitor and evaluate the most appropriate sports for inclusion in each event and over time has continued to evolve in order to deliver the best product and most value for its athletes and fans.  At this time, we decided that ESPN will focus on the disciplines of Snowmobile Freestyle and Best Trick and will not bring back the discipline of SnoCross and Speed & Style to Winter X Games Aspen.

SnoCross has been a great element of the Winter X Games for the past 14 years.  We’ve enjoyed working with the athletes and look forward to seeing many of them in Aspen as they continue to compete in the other disciplines…
